MIRPURKHAS: Mills ignoring growers

Published January 22, 2008

MIRPURKHAS, Jan 21: Sugarcane growers are facing difficulties in acquiring indents of their crop from sugar mills, which are being issued instead to big landlords and some selected farmers.

They complained that mills, including Digri, Al-Abbas, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar had not been issuing indents to a large number of small growers for the last 15 days.

They said their crop were losing weight and warned that if sugar mills remained closed for a week due to the reported threats of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, they would suffer heavy losses.

They urged authorities to take notice of the situation and said the responsibility of their losses would be on the mills.
