PESHAWAR, Jan 10: Inspector-General of Police Mohammad Sharif Virk has directed police officials to keep an eye on suspicious activities and foil designs to disturb the law and order situation in the province.

Talking to a delegation of Imamia Jirga led by Sardar Sajjad Hussein Zahid on Thursday, Mr Virk assured them that fool proof arrangements had been made for Muharram throughout the province, especially in Peshawar.

Police patrol had been increased and effective steps were being taken to avert any untoward incident.

He said that strict security would also be adopted for women congregations and policewomen would be deployed on sensitive spots. Mr Virk said each one of us should demonstrate unity, sectarian harmony and brotherhood and added that ulema should preach harmony and patience in their sermons.

The IGP directed police officials to keep a round-the-clock liaison with all sects and social organisations and give suggestions to maintain peace.

“We patriotic people and more disciplined and will practically demonstrate it during Muharram,” Sardar Zahid said.

No society, he said, could co-exist without peace and added that it was a moral obligation on everyone to join hands against outlaws. He asked for installation of streets lights and enhanced security measures in some sensitive areas and hoped that the law and order situation would be maintained.
