UNITED NATIONS, Jan 4: Pakistan is not on the agenda of the UN Security Council in the month of January, Libyan Ambassador Giadalla Ettalhi, the 15-member council’s incoming president, said on Thursday.

Mr Ettalhi, who was briefing reporters on the council’s work programme for January, was responding to a question whether he expected the situation in Pakistan following the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto to be discussed in the 15-member council.

“Pakistan is not on the agenda... but that does not mean the situation there is excluded,” he said.

The council president said he hoped that the situation in Pakistan would improve and elections would take place.

On Dec 27, the Security Council condemned Ms Bhutto’s assassination.

In a statement released after an emergency meeting with the presence of United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, council members condemned the terrorist attack and called on all Pakistanis to show restraint and maintain stability.
