SHIKARPUR, April 1: The district council, Shikarpur, has recommended to the government of Sindh to levy property tax on commercial as well as residential property under D-category in the entire district because it was one of the most backward areas of the province.
It said that since the district faced one of the highest percentages regarding unemployment it could not afford heavy taxes on property.
The council adopted this resolution at its meeting on Monday.
The meeting unanimously decided to shift the office of the district Nazim.
Meanwhile, the convener of the council, Zafar Ahmed Shaikh, disallowed a resolution presented by Agha Abdul Rehman, Syed Sabir Hussain Shah, and Nazeer Ahmed Odho demanding the withdrawal of the Greater Thal Canal project.
Session matters regarding construction of public parks and link roads, disconnection of street lights, etc., were decided unanimously.
Giving details regarding the development schemes, Syed Nadir Hussain Shah, the chairman of works and services committee and press advisor informed the session that 46 development schemes had been completed in the district under the Khushhal Pakistan Programme phase-II.
PPP: The PPP (Sindh) ladies wing president, Dr Yasmin Shah opposed the proposed referendum for presidentship terming it a fraud with the people like the referendum held by Gen Ziaul Haq.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, she said that Gen Pervez Musharraf who was holding the office of the president unconstitutionally was now again gaining the chance for becoming president for another five years unconstitutionally while misguiding the innocent people of Pakistan by holding referendum.
She expressed dissatisfaction over the delimitation for conducting the forthcoming general elections.
She favoured the condition of graduation for candidates to contest the general elections but favoured relaxation for female candidates saying that it should be intermediate or matric for women candidates because in our society females have got less opportunities for education in comparison to males.
She warned that the PPP would boycott the elections if any hindrance was created by the government over Ms Benazir Bhutto’s return.
