KHAIRPUR, Dec 12: President of the Khairpur Abadgar Ittehad, Shakir Shah, General Secretary, Faqir Niaz Hussain Bhambhro and a leader of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, Zanwar Ghulam Qasim Jiskani, have expressed concern over shortage of irrigation water in Khairpur district.

Talking to journalists, they said that water level at Sukkur Barrage upstream was 29,247 cusec and 24,597 cusec at downstream whereas at Guddu Barrage upstream it was 36,306 cusec and 32,086 cusecs downstream on Tuesday, which needed to be doubled.

They added that due to the shortage, land located at tail-end of the canals and minors in district Khairpur were not getting water which may hit sowing of wheat crop to the extent of 25 to 30 per cent.

They regretted that the seed of latest variety of wheat crop particularly TJ-83 was not available in the market. They added that 20 days remained in the peak season for wheat sowing and it was the government’s responsibility to ensure availability of seed and resolve the problem of water shortage.—Correspondent
