PESHAWAR, Dec 11: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) on Tuesday released the final list of its candidates contesting for 34 seats of the National Assembly in the Frontier province and eight in tribal areas, and 89 seats of the NWFP assembly.

Of the 35 NA seats in the province, the JUI (F) has fielded 33 candidates while the name of its candidate for the NA-27 Lakki Marwat has been withheld.

A major component of the MMA, the JUI fielded eight candidates for 12 NA seats in Fata.

Of the 99 general seats of the NWFP Assembly, the party has nominated candidates for 89 constituencies.

JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is contesting elections for three NA seats -- NA-24 (Dera Ismail Khan), NA-25 (Tank) and NA-26 (Bannu).

His three younger brothers —Maulana Attaur Rehman, Ubaidur Rehman and Maulana Lutfur Rehman — have been allotted tickets for four provincial assembly seats — PF-63, PF-65, PF-67 and PF-68.

A majority of the candidates are those who won the previous polls or took part in the 2002 elections.

Most of the candidates are graduates from religious institutions or associated with mosques in the capacity of Qaris and Pesh Imams (prayer leaders).

However, the list also includes some new names with comparatively non-political background but are wealthy individuals like Azam Swati who is contesting from the NA-21 (Mansehra) constituency.

The JUI has also fielded covering candidates to fill the vacuum after the Jamaat-i-Islami announced boycotting the elections.

The party has also fielded candidates against its old ally Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami group) from the NA-5 and NA-6 (Nowshera) constituency.

It is interesting to note that former provincial minister Malik Zaffar Azam has not been allotted ticket from the expected constituency of PF-41 (Karak-II).

The district chapter of the party, sources claimed, revolted against Mr Azam because he is a Green Card holder.

Former chief minister Akram Khan Durrani has been allotted ticket from the PF-73 (Bannu), his home constituency.Mr Durrani’s elder son Zayad Durrani has been allotted ticket from the PF-70 (Bannu) constituency.

Former MNA Maulana Mirajuddin has been given a ticket from the NA-42 (South Waziristan Agency) constituency.

Maulana Abdul Malik has been nominated from the NA-41 (South Waziristan-VI) constituency.
