SWABI, Dec 5: Supporters of the Awami National Party in the district have donated a million rupees as election fund for the campaign of the party’s president, Asfandyar Wali Khan, says the district information secretary, Mohammad Rashid.

The ANP chief is running for the National Assembly seat NA-12 (Swabi-I) constituency.

Mr Rashid on Wednesday said that various committees had been constituted by the party leadership to run the campaign.

In 2002, the seat was bagged by Mohammad Usman of the Jamaat-i-Islami and ANP’s Shehyar Khan was the runner up candidate.

Mr Rashid said that committees had been constituted for NA-12 (Swabi-I) and NA-13 (Swabi-II) while committees for six provincial assembly seats would be finalised soon.

He said that at present, ANP had not entered into any understanding with any party at the district level but did not rule out such alliance in future, adding that the situation would become clear in a few days.

Referring to the party president’s decision to run from Sawbi, he said. “This is a great honour and we can proclaim (in advance) that he will win,” he said.

Meanwhile, a dissenting group of the JUI, which preferred to call itself JUI (Haqiqi), constituted an 11-member committee and authorised it to hold talks with other political parties for seat adjustment.
