ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: Doctors treating Munir Malik, former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, are hopeful about his early recovery.

Mr Malik had suffered renal failure during his detention in the Attock Jail after which he was transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday and put on dialysis.

His detention orders were withdrawn because of his health condition.

Doctors blamed the complication on a combination of drugs given to him in the jail. Besides, they said, Mr Malik’s malfunctioning liver also contributed to the condition.

Mr Malik developed a fever on Wednesday and his ankles were swollen. The option of transferring him to the intensive care unit was discussed but his consultants decided against it, fearing that it could create unnecessary alarm.

Doctors say there has been some progress and the condition of his kidneys has slightly improved. They said he might be required to remain in the hospital for 10 days.
