LAKKI MARWAT, March 28: The district education authorities have stopped the distribution of furniture made of a very low quality and termite-hit wood to government schools, sources told Dawn here on Thursday.
The furniture, mostly comprising chairs and desks, was purchased under the Khushal Pakistan Programme (KPP).
The contract for the supply of the furniture was approved by the district council authorities under supervision of the district monitoring team.
But the furniture to be delivered to the schools was found to be of a very low quality and also infested with termites, the sources said.
Nearly 3,000 such chairs are lying in different schools of the district, the sources added.
When the education department officials were asked to distribute the furniture to the schools, the authorities refused as it had been damaged by white ants.
The students and public circles have appealed to the NWFP governor and the corps commander of Peshawar to take action against the those responsible.
WOODCUTTER HELD: The forest department arrested an Afghan refugee who was involved in cutting of trees from a nearby forest and seized his tractor and wood worth thousands of rupees.
Sources said that the forest department had information that the Afghan refugee and his accomplices would try to transport illegally-cut wood to the Serai Naurang market.
During a raid at the site, one Nadir Khan was arrested, while four of his accomplices escaped.
The accused was sent to jail by the court of senior civil judge Mohammad Bashir.
