GUJRANWALA, Nov 16: An assistant district public prosecutor (ADPP), Khurram Shaukat Chauhdry, on Friday tendered his resignation to protest the imposition of state of emergency and curbing the independence of the judiciary and of the media.

Flanked by District Bar Association (DBA) President Ilyas Rehan and Secretary Amir Munir Bagari, Mr Khurram told reporters that he could no more represent the government, which had curbed the freedom of judiciary and of the press in the garb of emergency since Nov 3.

He said as many as five more ADPPs wanted to tender their resignations. However, he did not disclose their names and said everybody would come to know their names very soon.

The former ADPP said he was a lawyer and would remain sided with the lawyers’ community and their cause. The DBA president and general secretary appreciated Khurram’s gesture of solidarity and announced to award him life membership of the bar.— Correspondent
