KOLKATA, Nov 11: The death toll rose to three in more clashes in an east Indian farming region where several people died this month in protests against plans to build a massive industrial park, police said.

The toll from Saturday’s clashes stood at three after two more people died on Sunday from their injuries, West Bengal state police Inspector-General Raj Kanojia said.

More than a dozen people who sustained bullet wounds during the weekend clashes were admitted to hospital, he said.

New Delhi dispatched 1,000 troops late on Saturday to restore order after supporters of rival political parties clashed in the state’s Nandigram village, 120 km south of the state capital Kolkata.

Saturday’s violence sparked a fresh exodus of hundreds of frightened families from Nandigram, police said.—AFP
