MMA top council meeting on Nov 8

Published October 24, 2007

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: A meeting of heads of the parties in the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) will be held on Nov 8 to try to sort out differences between the alliance’s president Qazi Hussain Ahmed and secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rehman over the issue of resignation of legislators and dissolution of the NWFP Assembly.

The six-party alliance’s supreme council meeting earlier scheduled for Oct 22 was cancelled, apparently because of indisposition of Qazi Hussain but its real reason was reported to be the acrimony among the Jamaat-i-Islami and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam.

However, Monday’s meeting between Maulana Fazl and the Jamaat chief in Peshawar helped to narrow down differences between them and they decided to tone down their statements against each other, sources said.

The meeting’s date was announced by Punjab MMA president Allama Syed Abdul Jalil Naqvi.
