MMA top body to meet on 22nd

ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: The supreme council of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will meet here on October 22 to resolve its internal differences and to review its relations with the All Parties Democratic Movement.

There have been speculations in recent days that the six-year old alliance may break up as a result of widening gulf between Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Fazlur Rehman to the extent that they have not been able to find time to meet despite hectic efforts made by some alliance leaders. The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) has made some scathing remarks about the Jamaat-i-Islami over the issue of resignation of the latter’s legislators from the NWFP assembly when Chief Minister Akram Durrani was facing a no-confidence motion.

Sources told Dawn that some JUI (F) leaders were planning to move a resolution to replace Qazi Hussain with Maulana Fazl as MMA president.

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, secretary general of JUI (F), has claimed that some MMA leaders were of the opinion that another party leader should get a chance to head the alliance.

However, Liaquat Baloch, who belongs to the JI, said: “Qazi Hussain Ahmed cannot be replaced as he has not completed two years as president according to the MMA constitution.”
