HYDERABDAD, March 21: The Sindh Tarraqi Passand Party (STPP), while celebrating Motherland Day at a local hotel on Thursday, strongly protested against and condemned the grant of approval by ECNEC for the construction of the Greater Thal Canal terming it “illegal, unconstitutional, immoral and anti-Sindh”.

Outrightly rejecting the Thal Canal Project, the gathering observed that the canal was the greatest of all dacoities over the waters of Sindh and it would completely destroy the agricultural sector, environment, and ecology of the province.

The gathering declared that it was the worst example of terrorism “to murder fifty million people of Sindh” and warned that no Sindhi would permit the construction of the anti-people, anti-Sindh and anti-environment project.

The meeting rejected Wapda’s vision 2025 to construct canal and dam and termed it a deep-rooted conspiracy against Sindh.

It resolved that the people from all walks of life including nationalist and political forces, technocrats, intellectuals, writers, growers, haris, and students would resist with full force all the water projects on the River Indus.

It demanded that keeping in view the unanimous opinion of the people of Sindh and in the interest of the unity of the Federation, the Thal Canal Project should be shelved forever.

The gathering demanded that Wapda should be disbanded and handed over to the federating units.

It demanded that the illegal Chashma Jhelum and Taunsa Punjnad canals should be closed forever.

It resolved that a commission comprising reputed international irrigation experts and experts from Sindh should be constituted to assess the total damage caused by Punjab to Sindh due to water theft and the total amount should be paid to Sindh.
