PESHAWAR, March 20: Awami National Party has criticized the Nazim of Peshawar Town Committee II for his plans to imposing taxes, saying it will add to citizens’ hardships.

In a statement, issued on Tuesday, ANP Information Secretary Haji Mohammad Adeel said the proposed manifold rise in taxes would increase the problems of people, who are already reeling under galloping inflation.

He demanded an immediate withdrawal of the proposal.

He said the new measures included a levy of Rs3 per foot for the approval of every site map, Rs360 as licence fee for vendors while the water tax had been proposed at Rs80 per month.

A former deputy speaker of the NWFP assembly, Haji Adeel said that contrary to people’s expectations, the new district government system had increased the hardships of people, which, he warned, could lead to a law and order situation.

He said the sanitation problem had worsened while complaints about shortage of potable water were also surfacing.

He appealed to the elected representatives to reject the proposed measures.
