PESHAWAR, Sept 14: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday filed a reference in an accountability court against two officials of the Kohistan district food department for allegedly misappropriating wheat meant for people affected by the 2005 earthquake.

District food officer Qammar Zia and food inspector Nazakat Shah, stationed at Dassu, have been charged under the Accountability Bureau Ordinance, 1999, with selling wheat and incurring a loss of Rs50 million to the exchequer.

The two accused were arrested on April 18 and remained in custody of the NAB for 39 days. Two other officials named in the same case were absconding.

REMAND GRANTED: An anti-terrorism court on Friday remanded an alleged car lifter, arrested during an encounter, in the custody of local police for five days.

The court presided over by Shahjee Rehman Khan directed police to produce the accused, Ahsanullah, after five days.

The Gulbahar police claimed that they had barricaded a road after receiving information about the presence of car lifters in the area. They said they signalled a car to stop but its occupants started firing on the police party, injuring policeman Lal Sher.

They said one of the accused, Ahsanullah, was arrested while two others escaped. An FIR was registered against them under section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
