HYDERABAD, Sept 11: Majority of members at the district council session on Tuesday complained about faults and leaks in the underground sewerage system in their areas and urged the district government to carry out repairs before it led to complete destruction of roads.

Convenor Zafar Ali Rajput asked the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) to plug leaks before the onset of Ramazan and warned that the officials concerned would be held responsible if the billions of rupees being spent on laying sewers and roads went a waste.

Hussain Bux Hussaini said that sewage of union councils 17-19 spilled into UC-20 and sewers overflowed in rains onto Tando Thoro road due to flaws in the system.

Khan Mohammad Chandio called for laying a drain in Tando Yousuf village. Rainwater had inundated the village during monsoon season, which only machines could drain out, he added.

Abbas Khan and Mehboob Abro said that no drainage line had been laid in Doomrah Goth and Parhiar Goth while Nasir Baloch tabled a resolution seeking shifting of goods transport outside the city. Police allowed truckers to enter the city after getting bribes, he said.

Supervising Police Officer (SPO) of Latifabad, Ayub Durrani, told the session that an inquiry conducted by two different police officers into Abdullah Shoro’s allegations showed they were baseless. Mr Shoro rejected the SPO’s claim and said that Husri police recently booked him for blocking roads while in fact he was persuading the protesters who had blocked the road to open it. He said that he was on bail.

Mehboob Abro alleged that only nazims belonging to one particular group were being booked and termed it political victimisation by district government.

Javed Ahmed Kardar’s resolution seeking construction of parking plazas drew support from Hussain Bux Hussaini, who identified places like Baldia Dispensary, Fire Brigade, Cloth Market, and an abandoned park outside Raheem Shopping Centre for raising multi-purpose plazas.

The convener formed an eight-member committee for organising Sindh Handicrafts Exhibition and said the district government had allocated Rs3 million for Hyderabad Festival 2008.

The session called for preserving cultural heritage in the city through a resolution and gave approval to re-appropriation of funds’ utilisation to avoid audit objections.
