Cricket stars in AIDS campaign

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 10: South African and West Indian cricket teams spoke to children on Monday as part of a United Nations programme to educate the youth on HIV/AIDS.

The ICC is working with two UN agencies – the UNAIDS and UNICEF – as well as LoveLife, South Africa’s national HIV programme, to promote AIDS awareness.

“It is important for us to play a role in educating these young ones on HIV/AIDS,” South African captain Graeme Smith told journalists after speaking to the children, most of them aged below 10 years.

West Indian captain Ramnaresh Sarwan added: “We will continue to encourage the youth to do the right thing. We are trying to help the kids to be aware of HIV/AIDS, and to encourage people not to discriminate against HIV carriers.”—AFP
