Notice to shopping bag units

Published September 1, 2007

LAHORE, Aug 31: District Coordination Officer (DCO) Mian Muhammad Ijaz has given a seven-day deadline to manufacturers to stop the production of black and thin plastic shopping bags.

Presiding over a meeting of plastic bags manufacturers and city district government officers on Friday, Mr Ijaz said the city district government would crack down on manufacturers of black and thin shopping bags from next week.

The factories manufacturing the prohibited bags would be sealed and cases would be registered against their owners. He said the provincial minister for environment had also been approached for amendments in the laws relating to manufacture of shopper bags.

Solid Waste Management district officer Dr Tufail Siddiqi said the prohibited bags were the major cause of choking of sewers and drains.
