KHAIRPUR, Aug 22: Villagers shot dead an alleged outlaw in an exchange of fire in the jurisdiction of Phuloo police station in the katcho area of Gambat taluka late on Tuesday night.

Villagers surrounded a hideout near Ismail Ja Pir village after they were tipped off that the outlaw, Ali Ahmed Khuhro, who had been at large since he killed four persons of his community Ameer, Asghar, Abdullah and Ali Sher, over a matrimonial dispute about three years ago, was there.

An exchange of fire ensued in which Ali Ahmed Khuhro was killed. The villagers handed over the body to his brother.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have arrested Anwar Kaleri, Gulshan Abro, Nasrullah Jhangri, Ghafoor Shaikh and Imran Malik after an encounter near Khuhra minor the same night.

DSP Wagan told journalists that four TT pistols and a single barrel gun were found in their possession.

GROWERS PROTEST: Scores of growers whose lands were irrigated by Khuhra Minor staged a demonstration and a sit-in on the Kamaldero Road on Wednesday in protest against what they termed as artificial shortage of water created by irrigation officials in the minor.

The protesters accused the irrigation officials of creating artificial shortage of water in the minor and chopping down a number of trees along the minor’s banks in the course of de-silting.

They complained that the water shortage had done irreparable damages to the mains crops, including sugarcane and cotton, and appealed to higher officials to order restoration of water release.
