Attendants attack doctor, wardboy

Published March 13, 2002

RAHIM YAR KHAN, March 12: A doctor and a wardbody of the Sheikh Zayed Hospital were attacked and beaten up by angry relatives of an injured man who succumbed to his wounds.

Hospital sources said Ehtashamul Haq, brother of councillor Ehsanul Haq, was brought to the hospital after he sustained serious injuries in a road accident.

Admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the surgical ward, Ehtasham expired shortly.

His attendants and relatives, however, blamed doctors for reacting too late. Accusing Dr Rehmat Ali of administering a wrong injection, they attacked him. The doctor literally ran for his life and managed to lock himself in a room.

A ward boy who intervened was later beaten up by the mob.

Rejecting allegations, surgical ward doctors said Ehtasham had died from bleeding.

The medical superintendent has decide to hold a departmental inquiry.
