LONDON, Aug 4: Jason Gardener, part of Britain's gold medal winning sprint relay team at the 2004 Olympics, said on Friday he will quit outdoor athletics at the end of the summer.

The 31-year-old failed to make it through to the final at the London Grand Prix meeting at Crystal Palace after finishing fourth in his heat in 10.41seconds.

“I have made the decision that I have got to the end of the road as a competing athlete. It has been a really good career but I want to move in a new direction now,” said Gardner.

“I have never wanted to go to the world championships in Osaka to make up the numbers, I have always wanted to win and it looks like I am not in that shape now.

“So at the end of the season that's it, I'm finished.”—AFP
