SWAT, July 23: A bomb went off near a police station in the Matta area on Monday, partially damaging its boundary wall and windowpanes of nearby houses, officials and eyewitnesses said.

No loss of life or property was reported.

Unidentified miscreants had planted the bomb near the Khwazakhela police station and the explosion caused panic in the area, police and residents said. People were still fearful and some were moving out to other safe areas in view of a possible showdown between security forces and militants.

In another incident, security forces defused a bomb planted near a checkpoint in the Fizza Gat area. The explosive device was fitted in a tin of edible oil.

Security forces had previously recovered explosives from the same area twice, sources said.

Our Correspondent from Bannu adds: Unidentified assailants attacked an FC checkpoint and injured one sepoy in Bakakhel area on Sunday night, officials said.

The attackers fired three rockets at the Tanga Bridge checkpoint at around 2am, damaging the post and seriously injuring Sepoy Jalil Khan, sources said.

This was the third attack in one week on checkpoints in the Frontier Region.
