SIALKOT, July 17: Work on a bridge over the river Tavi near Bajwat was again brought to a halt after the collapse of a 100 feet long beam on Monday. The construction of a 1,300 feet long bridge was resumed in June 2007 after about 10 months of suspension.

Reports said that the concrete beam, which was placed over the bridge on Sunday evening, collapsed due to the use of substandard material. No one was reported injured.

The project had been started some three-and-a-half years back with a revised estimated cost of Rs200 million, equally shared by federal and provincial governments.

The Sialkot district government has ordered a probe into the use of substandard material.
