KARACHI, July 14: Five people, including three members of a family, were shot at and wounded in Lyari gang war here on Saturday. The fresh wave of gang war, which began on Friday, has claimed three lives. Police failed to control the law and order situation as exchange of fire between gangs of Arshad Pappu and Rehman Dakait continued on Saturday. A family, travelling in a rickshaw in the Kalakot area, was caught in the crossfire between criminals. Jahan Ara, 55, her daughter Sobia, 25, grandson Naseer, 8, and rickshaw driver suffered bullet wounds. Mohammad Javed, 40, a passer-by, also received bullets in the same incident. All the injured were taken to a hospital.

Area people said that the police had disappeared from the area and criminals were roaming around the area, firing on each other. The situation has terrorised residents and forced them to remain confined to their homes.

TPO Lyari Pir Farid Jan Sarhandi said that a grand operation was needed to eliminate criminal groups from the area but the decision would be taken by police hierarchy and the government.
