KARACHI, July 11: Alamzaib Junior of the NWFP pulled off an upset on the opening day of inaugural DG Rangers Sindh National Junior Squash Championship when he beat beating Waqar Mehboob 3-1 at Rangers Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Third seeded Alamzaib lost the penultimate game before overcoming the highly-ranked Waqar who was a member of Pakistan's Asian Junior Championship winning outfit in Hong Kong under-19 event last year.Top seed Shoaib Hasan of Punjab launched his campaign in style by routing qualifier Shahzad Khan of NWFP 3-0, dropping only three points in the process.

Second seed Farzan Rasheed from Punjab and fourth seed Muhammad Naeem of

Sindh also won their matches. Naeem dropped a game before beating Adnan Khan of Navy.

Raza Yaqoob of Punjab produced a sterling show when he came from 0-2 down to carve out an exciting 3-2 victory over Asim Shahzad of PAF. Owais Rahim of Punjab and M. Bilal of NWFP were involved in a five-game thriller in under-17 first round before Owais emerged 9-1, 9-5, 1-9, 3-9, 10-9 winner.

The well-organised championship carries a prizemoney of Rs.300,000. —APP
