OKARA, July 11: A police constable was killed in a shootout with alleged robbers here on Wednesday near village Jabooka, some 20km away from the city. The police arrested one of the dacoits.

Reports said a Satgrah police team was on routine patrol. On Jabooka-Jandraka Road near Jabooka, they signalled three bike riders to stop but they opened fire. During a crossfire, police van driver constable Ghulam Qadir was killed on the spot.

The police continued to chase the outlaws and overpowered one of them — Muhammad Tufail of 355-GB, Faisalabad - while his two accomplices managed his escape.

The deceased policeman was the only son of former district council member Rai Basara of Jandraka tehsil, Okara.

His funeral prayers were offered by police, including SP investigation Abdul Hameed Niazi, and notables of the city.

Later his body was sent to his ancestral village Jandraka.
