MOSCOW, July 8: Pakistan beat lowly-rated Scotland 4-0 to win the four-nation hockey tournament at Elektrostal Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

Forward Shakeel Abbasi scored twice in the second-half, while Arshad Ahmad and skipper Rehan Butt scored one goal apiece.

Pakistan’s last victory was in 2005 when they won Rabo Trophy in the Netherlands.

Pakistan started the game with fast moves, but lethargic forwards Shakeel and Tariq Aziz failed to deliver.

Pakistan grabbed the lead in the 21st minute through Arshad who flicked the ball in from a narrow angle after being set up by Rehan.

It was actually a compensation for lapse in the 20th minute when Rehan’s attempt was padded away by Scottish goalkeeper Alister McGregor and Shakeel failed to score on rebound, although he had an open chance.

Surprisingly, the green shirts failed to force a single short corner and relied mainly on scoring through field efforts.

The world number 25 Scots, who drew 4-4 with Russia on Saturday to move into the final, made desperate efforts but could not open scoring.

Pakistan produced two goals in five minutes after break when Shakeel found the target after being fed by Kashif Ali in the 37th minute.

Akhtar Ali impressed with a long sprint to beat the entire defence and send the ball to an unmarked Shakeel who swiftly put the ball into the net in 41st minute.

Pakistan were, however, reduced to ten players when Imran Khan was shown a yellow card for rough play.

Shakeel, declared best player of the final, was instrumental in producing Pakistan's fourth goal as he set up Rehan who scored in the 54th minute.

In a classification match hosts Russia beat Ukraine 5-2 for the third place.

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan defeated minnows Ukraine 5-0 to reach the final.

Muhammad Imran struck twice, while Imran Warsi, Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt sharing one goal apiece.

Although Pakistan won, they were involved in missing several chances, erratic hitting, and lack of coordination. The green shirts had already managed a shock 2-2 draw with Scotland earlier, but they failed to impress against Ukraine too.

Imran Warsi converted the second of the five short corners in the 18th minute, placing the ball in the roof of the net to give Pakistan a 1-0 lead.

Pakistani forwards Shakeel, Akhtar Ali and skipper Rehan failed to deliver and wasted several sitters. After a pathetic first-half performance, Pakistan made it 3-0 as first Rehan set up Shakeel who scored in the 42nd minute and then Muhammad Imran found the cage.

Pakistan fielded second choice goalkeeper Nasir Ahmad, calling Salman Akbar to bench. Muhammad Imran got his double in the 51st minute, while Rehan completed the tally on an indirect drill off sixth short corner.—APP
