LAHORE, June 27: Prof Javeed Ahmed Sheikh, a former vice-principal of the Government College Lahore, passed away after brief illness at a local hospital on Wednesday.

Prof Sheikh’s liver ruptured five days ago while he was delivering a lecture. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. His wife Ms Nasreen Javed is currently serving as associate professor of political science at the Lahore College for Women University.

Prof Sheikh was born in Gujranwala on March 20, 1944, and joined the GC in 1967 as a lecturer in political science department where he was later appointed as chairman.

In 1989-90, the Punjab government transferred and posted him as the principal of the Government Degree College, Sheikhupura. He was given Fulbright scholarship by the US government.

Prof Sheikh re-joined GC, Lahore, as its last vice-principal and retired in 2003. However, he continued his association with the institution as a visiting faculty member as well as the coordinator of MPhil leading to PhD programmes of the political science department.
