HYDERABAD, June 25: The Students Alliance of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences has warned that if the arrested students of the university are not released and the director of students’ affairs does not tender apology to the students, a protest movement will be launched throughout Sindh and a damages/defamation suit of Rs50 million filed against the university administration.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Monday, Sindh National Students Federation president Khadim Hussain Unnar, Sindh People’s Students Federation leader Dr Fayaz Rajpar, SPSF-SB leader Ali Gohar Chandio and others said that five students of the university belonging to different students organisations had been arrested on Sunday at the instance of the director, Dr Khadim Lakhair.

Mr Unnar said that the only fault of those students was that they had exposed corrupt practices of the university administration.

He said that few days ago, the vice-chancellor had assured the representatives of students organizations that misunderstandings between the university administration and the students would be removed, teaching departments would be given autonomy, teachers’ attendance would be ensured and no new medical college would be established.

He claimed that the vice-chancellor had also given an assurance that the university would keep the students informed about funds being spent on hostels and transport and the audit report in this regard.

However, the promises were not honoured, the student leader said.
