KARACHI, June 16: Brothers Zuhair Raza and Abbas Raza were through to the next round of men’s singles with convincing wins over their respective opponents on the opening day of the second STA development series tennis championship at PN Karsaz courts on Saturday.

Zuhair handed a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Mustafa Jamal while Abbas got the better of Shayan Z. Khan 6-0, 6-1.

The youngsters were the main suffers as couple of players retired due to scorching heat. Yayha Essa struggled to beat Qamber Hyder in three gruelling sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the second round of boys’ U-15.

Boys’ U-15 singles (first round): Shehryar Ahmed bt Ahsan Chawla 6-2, 1-0 (retd); Omer Usman bt Taha Sereng 6-1, 6-1; Yayha Essa bt Qamber Hyder 6-2, 5-7, 6-4; Komail Ali bt Shahrukh Asim 6-4, 5-0 (retd); Ali Zubair bt Shahbaz Khan 6-3, (retd); Uzair A. Qadir bt Afeef 6-0, 6-0.

Men’s singles (qualifying round): Arshad Shahid bt Ahsan Zuberi 6-2, 6-3.

Men’s singles (first round): Syed Zuhair Raza bt Mustafa Jamal 6-2, 6-2; Syed Abbas Raza bt Shayan Z. Khan 6-0, 6-1.

Sunday’s fixtures: Boys’ U-13 singles 9.00am; juniors U-17 singles 12.00noon; men’s singles 2.00pm.
