DHAKA, June 3: Fakhruddin Ahmed, head of Bangladesh’s army-backed interim government, fell sick and collapsed during a state function outside the capital on Sunday, officials said.

“The chief is fine and is expected to resume work on Monday,” Fakhruddin Ahmed’s press secretary Fahim Munaim told Reuters.

Mr Ahmed was flown to a Dhaka military hospital from Tangail, where he collapsed while addressing a government function.

Earlier, Mr Fahim said: “The chief has regained his consciousness and is stable now. He is faring normally.”

Mr Ahmed, 64, was speaking at a tree plantation programme in Tangail, 100km north from Dhaka, when he lost consciousness and collapsed. He was immediately taken to a local hospital.

“He was exhausted due to hot and humid weather while delivering a long speech. He collapsed after speaking for over an hour,” the press secretary said.—Reuters
