VEHARI, June 1: About a dozen mud houses collapsed and crops on more than 500 acres damaged when a 50-foot-wide breach occurred in Khaddar Link Canal Gulamwaha, near Mauza Tajwana, on Thursday night.

The irrigation department staff failed to plug the breach till the filing of this report.

About 60 families were also affected as gushing water entered their houses.

A group of the affected people said the irrigation team reached here on Friday afternoon. They criticised the local administration and representatives of different departments for playing the role of silent spectators.

They claimed they had informed the irrigation department about the poor condition of the canal bank but the department never took any step to strengthen it. Irrigation officials said the equipment has reached the affected area and the breach would be plugged within 12 hours. He said an inquiry would be complete in three days.

REHABILITATION CENTRE: A centre is being established in the district jail in collaboration with the health department for rehabilitation of drug users.

Jail Superintendent Qadeer Alam said at present, about 45 drug-addicts were being treated in the centre free of cost.

He said for this purpose, a six-member committee, headed by EDO (health) Dr Zulfiqar Bhango, has been formed. The other members are: jail hospital MS Dr Nasir Dilshad, Dr Tariq, Dr Abid, DHQ MO Dr Ahmad Hasan and he himself. Dr Nasir said the hospital would provide technical support for screening of HIV-AIDS, hepatitis B and C to the employees and prisoners. — Correspondent
