White tiger cubs die in Jakarta zoo

Published October 21, 2001

JAKARTA, Oct 20: Three white tiger cubs have died at a zoo here, the Jakarta Post reported on Saturday.

A former employee of Jakarta’s Ragunan Zoo, Nadi Sanjaya, alleging negligence by zoo authorities, claimed the baby tigers died after consuming rancid pork.

“It’s veterinarian of the zoo who caused the deaths,” he alleged in a statement to city councillors, the Post reported.

However the zoo’s manager, Ismunanto, said typhoid was to blame. Typhoid is contracted from the food-borne Salmonella bacteria often found in rotten meat.—AFP
