Lawyers take out rally

OKARA, May 3: Lawyers took out a big rally on Thursday from the bar room up to the Okara Press Club.

The rally passed through the Saddar Bazaar, Kutchery Bazaar and Hospital Bazaar reached the press club where their leaders expressed solidarity with journalists on the occasion of International Press Freedom Day.

District PPP president Ashraf Sohna and party activists joined the lawyers’ rally at Gole Chowk.

After the rally, the lawyers set up a token hunger strike camp at the bar room from 12 noon to 2pm to express solidarity with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and no lawyer appeared in the courts.

The lawyers chanted slogans against the government.

ARREST: Deepalpur police arrested journalist Javed Kanwal Chandor to stop him from joining the rally which was taken out to express solidarity with the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Mr Chandor is the bureau chief of an Urdu-language daily.

ACCIDENT: A motor mechanic, Kaleem Safdar, 40, was hit and killed near Chorasta Mian Khan on Thursday.

Kaleem was going to Okara from Deepalpur on his motorcycle when a speeding car coming from opposite direction knocked him down. He died on the spot.

Deepalpur Saddar police have registered a case.

GANGS BUSTED: The Okara police claimed to have arrested 90 members of 22 gangs during a special drive in April and recovered stolen articles worth Rs10 million from their possession.

The arrested outlaws confessed to 47 new crimes and 145 untraced cases during preliminary investigation.

The stolen items recovered from their possession include one car, 19 motorcycles, mobile phones, foreign currency and cattle.
