TAXILA, May 2: Deputy parliamentary leader Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Liaquat Baloch has said they would resist the re-election of President Gen Pervez Musharraf from the present assemblies.

Talking to local mediapersons on Tuesday, he said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal supported the PML-N leadership’s announcement that it would resign from assemblies if Gen Musharraf tried to re-elect himself from the present assemblies.

He said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif would convene an all parties’ conference next month to constitute a grand alliance to stop Gen Musharraf from taking part in the next election.

In reply to a question, he said if PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto strikes a deal with President Musharraf it will be a blow to the struggle for restoration of democracy in the country.

“We are concerned about reports of PPP’s contacts with Musharraf and avoiding of direct criticism of the general by the top leadership of the party. However, we hope the PPP will follow the Charter of Democracy,” he said.
