MIRPURKHAS, April 23: Hundreds of farmers from Digri and Jhuddo talukas staged a demonstration here on Monday to protest against water shortage at the tail-end channels of Jamrao and Mithrao canals.
The demonstration was held when a session of the district council was in progress. The protesters were raising slogans against the irrigation officers concerned.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Aslam, Lal Khan Leghari, Irshad Ali and others alleged that the irrigation officers had created artificial shortage of water in the tail-end channels of Mithrao and Jamrao canals and were implementing unannounced rotation programme.
They said that sowing of cotton and chilli crops would be adversely affected if proper water supply was not ensured to the distributaries.
They regretted that even drinking water was not available in different villages of the area. They appealed to the higher authorities to ensure proper supply of water to the channels.
Members of the district council, Mir Zafarullah Talpur and Mohammad Aslam Kaimkhani, met with the protesters and assured them of raising the issue in the council session.
District Council: Members of district council and others have demanded to end shortage of water in canals, stop sale of spurious and sub-standard pesticide and fertilizers in the district.
The meeting held here on Monday, was presided by Naib District Nazim, Zafar Ahmed Kamali the members, including Nawab Younus Talpur, Aslam Kaimkhani, Ali Mardan Shah, Amanullah, Chaudhry Ahsanul Haq, Ameer Hassan Kaimkhani and Fakhruddin Bhatti, which demanded execution of proposed works on LBOD drains and natural nullah of water which the government has announced during the torrential rains.
It prayed for the departed soul of late former Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Abdullah Shah.
Ms Shamim Jhundair and other women members demanded an end to gender discrimination and sought development schemes on equal basis.
The convener directed the agriculture department officers to take effective measures for stoppage of sale of spurious and substandard pesticides and fertilisers.
