KARACHI, April 13: Playing true to her potential, Sindh’s Nida Waseem swept all three women’s gold – singles, doubles and team event – in the games tennis event of the 30th National Games at the CDGK Sports Complex on Friday.

She disposed off Army’s Natasha Afridi 6-2, 6-4 for the ladies singles crown. Nida and Farah Khurshid (Sindh) combined together to beat Army’s Sara Mahboob/Natasha Afridi 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the ladies doubles gold. Earlier, Nida helped Sindh win the ladies team event title.

Army’s Sara Mahboob beat Sindh’s Nyla Khan 6-1, 6-2 to get the ladies singles bronze.

The ladies doubles bronze went to Wapda’s Seher Khwaja/Ghazala Yasmin who accounted for Sana Khan/Sadia Rashid (HEC) 6-2, 6-0 in the playoff.

Country’s top player Aqeel Khan and Mohammad Khaliq (Wapda) stormed into men’s singles final after winning their pre-finals on Friday.

Aqeel downed Inam Gul (PAF) 6-2, 6-4 while Khaliq get past Shahzad (PAF) 6-3, 6-3.

The men’s singles and doubles final are slated for Saturday morning at 9.30am.

M. Khaliq/Aqeel Khan (Wapda) bt Rashid Malik/Taimoor (Army) 7-5, 6; Inam Gul/Rashid Khan (PAF) bt Jahangir/Israr Gul (NWFP) 6-4, 6-3.

VOLLEYBALL

Pakistan Police spikers snatched gold in the volleyball event which concluded at the KPT Sports Complex on Friday.

The Policemen toppled reigning national champion Army 25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21 to end the single league competition with a clean slate securing maximum 10 points from five games.

PAF chalked up a straight 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 victory over NWFP to secure silver with nine points.

Army had to be content with bronze after earning eight points from five games.

In the third match of the day, Wapda edged past hosts Sindh 25-12, 25-18, 25-8.

NETBALL

Pakistan Police beat Sindh 38-36 goals in the final to capture gold in the games netball event (men) on Friday.

The bronze went to Army who get past Wapda 50-48 goals in the playoff in yet another nail-biting finish.

Hosts Sindh annexed the women’s gold handing 38-36 defeat to Wapda. The bronze went to Punjab who beat Army 34-29 in the playoff.

SAILING

The naval sailors rounded off the games regatta by claiming the Match Racing gold medal on Friday.

The quartet of Mamoon Sadiq, Zahid Rauf, Hameed Baloch and Amir Nawaz gave Navy their sixth gold of the competition by finishing ahead of the fleet.

The silver also went to Navy (Ashraf, Akram, Riaz, Ashfaq) while PAF (Yousuf, Tanveer, Mahboob, Irshad) picked up the bronze.—AZ
