GUJRANWALA, April 12: Jewellers of Ghakkhar Town continued their shutterdown strike on Thursday in protest against the rising incidence of robberies. They alleged that the police failed to provide protection to jewellers and other traders, demanding early arrest of the accused.

On Wednesday, three armed men looted shops of four jewellers, including that of Shahid Altaf, brother of railway DIG Sarfraz Ahmad, and injured jeweller Ijaz Ahmed on offering resistance. The dacoits had reportedly taken away cash and gold ornaments worth Rs2.5 million from the shops.

After the incident, traders closed their shutters and chanted slogans against the police and the rising lawlessness.

The Anjuman Tajran has announced that shutterdown will continue till the arrest of dacoits.

Police officers have assured them that the accused will be arrested soon.
