LAHORE, April 9: The lawyers of former Test fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has served a legal notice on Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, Dr Nasim Ashraf, under the act of the defamation ordinance, citing his malicious statements in Urdu dailies as the main cause.

The maverick pacer also refused to appear before the World Cup's performance evaluation committee (PEC) on Sunday.

Sarfraz's legal associates, headed by retired Justice Malik Qayyum, served the notice under section 8 of the defamation Ordinance 2002 after the former pacer had addressed a press conference at the Lahore Press Club.

According to the notice, the respondent (Nasim Ashraf) in an interview with local Urdu dailies had said that “our client was a person of disrepute, a bazaari person, not a true Pakistani and was bringing a bad name to Pakistan.”

Sarfraz lawyers further stated in the notice: "That your false and malicious statements and representations have unfairly targeted our client, specifically with the aim and purpose of defaming and damaging the excellent reputation enjoyed by our client both within and outside of Pakistan.”

“Your statements in the publications have appeared with a title that is fallacious, frivolous and malicious in the extreme.

“In view of the above, you are being served with this legal notice under section 8 of the defamation ordinance 2002 and are hereby given 14 days from the issuance of this legal notice to make good the loss and damage suffered by our client amount to Rs100 million and to publish an apology/retraction in the dailies,” it states.
