SIALKOT, April 8: The only extinguisher at Daska fire station has been lying out of order for the last ten months.

The town residents, especially the businessmen, have expressed serious concern over the situation as the non-functioning of the necessary vehicle could result in loss of life and property in case an emergency occurs.

The concern was expressed at an emergent meeting of local traders held on Sunday in connection with a recent incident in which a trader, Sheikh Naveed, suffered heavy financial loss when a fire erupted at his general store because of power short-circuit, gutting daily-use items worth millions of rupees. The fire extinguisher called from Sialkot reached the spot after three-hour delay when the damage had been done.

The traders at the meeting alleged that the Tehsil Municipal Administration had been turning a blind eye to the situation.

They urged the provincial and district governments to look into the matter to avert any untoward situation.

When contacted, the TMA officials concerned chose to remain tightlipped on the issue.

SOLID WASTE: People in Sialkot generate 647 tonnes of solid waste and garbage every day, of which tehsil municipal administrations lift 392 tonnes, Sialkot DCO Rizwan Ullah Baig told Dr Amjad at a meeting.

The DCO said the huge quantity of unattended refuse was creating environmental pollution, besides, posing serious health problems to the people. He said this un-scientific dumping of refuse had been in practice since long and tehsil municipal administrations had not taken any measure to set up refuse dumps.— Correspondent
