Chelsea close in on Man United

Published April 8, 2007

LONDON, April 7: Chelsea turned up the heat on Premier League leaders Manchester United with a 1-0 home defeat of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday to cut the gap to three points.

Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho settled the contest after 53 minutes, beating Spurs keeper Paul Robinson with a skimming low drive from well outside the penalty area.

United can re-establish their six-point advantage when they play at Portsmouth in the day's late kickoff.

Chelsea's eighth consecutive league victory without conceding a goal was in the balance until the final whistle against a re-jigged Tottenham side who had been in UEFA Cup quarter-final action against Sevilla just 36 hours before.

Salomon Kalou should have given the champions, also looking jaded after their Champions League exertions against Valencia on Wednesday, some breathing space but failed to connect properly with a close-range effort shortly after Carvalho's opener.
