FAISALABAD, April 5: A mob attacked the Khurrianwala police station on Thursday and ransacked the official record, pelting the vehicles with stones and threw traffic out of gear for two hours over the killing of an employee of a rural health centre.

Reports said Muhammad Afzal was on his way back home from his duty when two motorcyclists ambushed him near Chak 96-RB. Afzal died on the spot and the killers managed to escape.

Two months ago, robbers plundered cash and valuables from Afzal’s house and he got registered a case against Sarang and some of his accomplices. The alleged gangsters had been threatening the victim with dire consequences for pursuing the case registered against them in the Khurrianwala police station.

Afzal informed the police about the threats, but they did not bother to provide him protection.

The news of Afzal’s death spread like a jungle fire and scores of people of his locality blocked traffic on Khurrianwala Road. The mob chanted slogans against the police and broke the windowpanes of the Jaranwala DSP office.

Saddar SP Shahzad Akbar rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters, holding out an assurance to them that action would be taken against culprits.

A case has been registered against Sarfraz and two of his unidentified accomplices.

DIG (Operations) Muhammad Aslam Tareen suspended Khurrianwala SHO Saleem Haider Shah from service for dereliction of duty.

A police spokesman denied ransacking of official record or attack on the police station building.
