KARACHI, April 3: The city needs 1,000 vehicles for lifting and transporting over 8,000 tonnes garbage to landfill sites on a daily basis.

This was stated by the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) consultants for community and technical services, Bebetg Gozun and Nicholas J. Allen, during a meeting with City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil at her office on Tuesday.

The delegation is conducting a survey on the solid waste management system and after completion it would submit its proposals to the city government for bringing improvement in the overall system.

The ADB’s experts informed the city naib nazim that the city needed 1,000 vehicles for transporting garbage from all its 18 towns to the landfill sites. Keeping in view the distance between the city and landfill sites, the delegation suggested establishing centres for separating garbage before dumping it at the landfill sites.

The experts also informed Ms Jalil that they were preparing a roadmap for solid waste management and would finalise their recommendations and proposals within two to three weeks.

They stressed the need for creating awareness among the masses for cleanliness and garbage disposal.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jalil said that at present some 453 vehicles were used for disposal of garbage. She said that besides the city government and union councils, NGOs should also play their role in creating public awareness on waste disposal.—Staff Reporter
