Naib nazim disqualified

LAHORE, March 31: The Lahore High Court on Saturday disqualified a naib nazim from the Kasur district for declaring false figures of his assets before elections.

Judge Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on naib nazim Maqsood Ansari for misleading the court and misusing the judicial process.

The court directed the authorities concerned to fill the naib nazim’s seat and as well a peasant quota seat to be vacated after his disqualification.

The petitioner, the naib nazim, had challenged the orders of the returning officer (RO) as well as the district returning officer (DRO), who had rejected his nomination papers for the reserved seat for peasant.

Upholding orders of the RO and DRO, the court observed that petitioner’s nomination papers were invalid as he was disqualified to contest elections against a seat reserved for peasant.

The court held that since the petitioner was not qualified to contest the election, results of his election, both as a member and as a naib nazim, were also declared void.

The petitioner had filed the petition on Sept 27, 2005, against the rejection of his nomination papers and the court had provisionally allowed him to contest elections on Oct 4, 2005, which were to be held after two days on Oct 6.

The court also observed that the petitioner did not qualify to contest elections on a seat reserved for peasant. —Staff Reporter
