MUZAFFARABAD, Feb 25: The Indian troops on Monday resumed unprovoked shelling from across the LoC, killing one civilian and injuring six others in southern Poonch District of Azad Kashmir, police said.

The superintendent of police, Raja Ghulam Sarwar, told Dawn here that the Indian troops using mortars and machine-guns resorted to shelling at about 1:40 pm, targeting different villages of the Hajira sector in the district.

Mohammad Ashfaq, 27, son of Karam Dad was killed and Kashif, 16, and Mirza Khan, 55, were injured in Dunga Ghambhir village. Mohammad Rafiq and Idrees were injured in the villages of Tetrinot and Sehar, respectively. Two more persons also received injuries in the same sector, but their names could not be ascertained. The injured were admitted in the Combined Military Hospital, Rawalakot.

The Abbaspur sector in Poonch also came under firing with small and big arms at around 4:45 pm, but the police had not received any casualty report from there, the SP said.

Early on Monday morning, he said, the Indian troops had also hit a passenger bus near Seemari village, some 60 kilometres northeast from here in Neelum valley, but fortunately no loss was reported.

Monday’s shelling coincided with the Indian president’s address to the Indian parliament in which he said New Delhi would keep its army movement on the border with Pakistan until it was convinced that Islamabad had stopped supporting attacks by the Mujahideen on Indian targets.
