KINGSTON, March 22: Various members of the Pakistan squad on Wednesday paid glowing tributes to their late coach Bob Woolmer at a remembrance meeting here at the team’s hotel.

Each player lauded the efforts of Woolmer who died mysteriously here on Sunday after Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup due to their stunning defeat at the hands of Ireland.

Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq praised Woolmer’s great contribution for Pakistan cricket, adding that his services will be remembered for a long time. “Losing him (Woolmer) is sad and shocking. His death was a great blow for the entire team and every follower of the game,” Inzamam expressed.

“He served Pakistan cricket with honour and dignity and cannot be blamed for the team’s poor showing in the World Cup,” he observed.

“During his tenure, Pakistan won back-to-back home Test series against England and India besides performing exceptionally well on the 2005 tour to India and last year’s home Test and one-day series against the West Indies,” Inzamam recalled.

Pakistan manager Talat Ali said Woolmer was a good human being and a great man whose death was a big loss for Pakistan cricket.

Vice-captain Younis Khan commended the services of Woolmer, describing his death as a huge loss for world and Pakistan cricket.

Mushtaq Ahmed, who took over as coach after Woolmer’s tragic death, rated him as the finest coach the cricketing world has ever seen.

“It was great honour to work under and with him and I learnt a lot from him,” Mushtaq complimented.

Members and officials of the Ireland team also attended the remembrance ceremony. —APP
