MIRPURKHAS, Oct 19: Acute shortage of water in the Nara canal was damaging the standing crops and delaying the wheat sowing.
Reports flowing in here indicate that in the command area of Nara canal, standing crops of cotton, onion, Chilli, sugarcane and vegetables were adversely affected, owing to the problem created due to rotation programme under which a distry is closed for 15 days.
The growers have started preparing the lands for wheat cultivation, but it was feared that the wheat sowing would be delayed as the ongoing scarcity of water in the Nara and its three canals including Jamrao, Mithrao and Thar Wah.
The growers have alleged that irrigation department officials were selling water and not providing the sanctioned quantity of water in the distributaries.
They demanded of the authorities to provide approved gauge of water to each distry to save their crops.

Our Khairpur correspondent adds: Over one hundred growers of Nara and Salehpat talukas staged a protest march against the water distribution and rotation system on Friday.
The protesters marched from Kathoreo via Tajal Gagero to Sikandarabad.
Talking to newsmen, their representatives said that 25 minors fed from Nara canal have been closed, which include Chundko, Sikandarabad, Pharehorio, Tajal, Kathoreo, Sorah, Dodo, Sohni, Lawanri, Faqirabad, Nawabad and Kumarho water channels.
The angry growers threatened to launch protest movement if water was not immediately supplied to their lands.
NON-PAYMENT: Employees of various union councils on Thursday continued their protest against the non-payment of their salaries for the past several months.
They complained that due to the pathetic situation, their children are suffering from illness and hunger.
They demanded of the government to immediately address their concern and get rid of them from the miserable state of affairs.
INJURED: Ali Raza Jagirani (8) received serious burn injuries and was hospitalized when the house of Habibullah Jagirani in village Jagirani taluka Kingri caught fire here on Thursday.
The cause of fire could not be ascertained.
