Rs7 billion package for Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA, March 15: President Gen Pervaiz Musharraf on Thursday announced a development package of Rs7 billion for city and Rs 1.24 billion for union councils of rural areas.

Speaking at a public meeting at Jinnah Stadium, he said the city water supply and sanitation system would be revamped. Roads, recreation parks and a library would also be constructed.

He said each union council of the district would get a development grant of Rs5 million for the current fiscal.

The president laid the foundation stone of 550kv grid station at Nokhar Town. He hoped the Rs 4.5 billion project would be completed in one and half year.

The president also addressed the inaugural ceremony of the Punjab University sub-campus here.

SECURITY: The district administration and police made unprecedented security measurements following deploying troops and heavy contingents of police along both sides of the GT Road while almost all shops, filling stations, business centres and offices of the government were closed.

Security forces even stopped vehicles carrying girls students who were on their way to appear in their annual BA examinations. When the girls protested, they were allowed to carry on their journey.
