GUJRAT, Oct 19: The district council summoned SSP Riaz Ahmad to appear before the house on Friday to explain what it said deteriorating law and order situation in the district during the last two months.

During its second day proceedings on Thursday, the council passed a resolution against police and sought explanation against rising incidents of murder, dacoity, abduction for ransom and other crimes.

Several members of the house alleged that the Gujrat police chief had failed to maintain law and order in the district. They said the crime graph from Aug 14 onwards had shown alarming rise.

Meanwhile, a Nazim revealed that councillor Mian Ashfaq had been kidnapped by four outlaws two days back and he was released after paying huge amount as ransom.

He alleged that police had got concocted details printed, according to which, they had got him released without ransom. But the fact remained that they failed to arrest the culprits.

However, the opposition did not support the house and asked for solid evidence against the police.

RANSOM: Four outlaws, who had kidnapped a councillor two days back, released him after taking a ransom of Rs3 million on Thursday, it was learnt.

As per details, Mian Ashfaq of Dinga was intercepted by outlaws on Tuesday near Ismala along the Upper Jhelum canal. They took him to an unknown place at gunpoint.

Sources told Dawn that they released him after taking the ransom from his family. The incident took place in Kharian Saddar’s jurisdiction.

When contacted, Kharian ASP Ali Ahmad Sabir Kiani told the correspondent that Mr Kiani was not present in his office.
